A versatile, all-purpose hunting knife — perfectly suited for a wide range of tasks.
The Maris started as a question: what happens if the Ventari’s blade meets the Cael’s handle? The answer turned out to be one of the most complete all-purpose hunting knives we make.
From the Ventari side, a 125mm micro-bevel blade with exceptional tip dexterity — the same tip that made its parent famous for turning tight corners mid-cut. From the Cael side, the v2 handle chassis: the ergonomic grip and integrated index guard our professional customers swear by, safe in wet hands and comfortable across a long session. Neither half was compromised to fit the other.
The Maris suits the hunter whose season refuses to specialise — carcass work one weekend, camp and fieldcraft the next, a fallow cull in November and a roe buck in May. The micro bevel keeps the edge working through all of it with minimal attention. It is deliberate, unglamorous versatility, done properly.
Think of the Maris as the bridge between the Cael and Ventari families: more blade than a Cael, more handle than a Ventari. For a first Emberleaf that has to do everything, it is one of the strongest candidates in the catalogue.
Most Mariss leave the bench in one of our working stainless steels: RWL-34, a high-chromium stainless with excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance; PMC27, a powder-metallurgy steel with a fine grain that takes a keen edge and asks very little maintenance; or AEB-L, the razor-blade stainless whose fine carbides give a very keen edge with good toughness. Traditionalists can have O1 tool steel — a carbon steel that sharpens to an exceptionally fine edge and rewards a little oil and attention.
For something quietly spectacular, we pattern-weld our own stainless Damascus in-house from RWL-34 and PMC27 — Vinland, Gysinge, Ladder, Odin’s Eye, Thor and a dozen other patterns, each combining high corrosion resistance with exceptional edge retention. On a Maris, Damascus turns a working tool into an heirloom without costing it a day’s work.
Every sheath is handmade in-house and moulded to the individual knife it will carry — not to the pattern, to the knife. Leather comes in classic black or brown, or a custom colour; hand-tooled work is available, up to and including engraved silver panels. For those who work in all weathers, Kydex is offered on our hybrid leather carry system.
Every Maris is numbered and entered in the workshop ledger — steel, handle, date, owner — and carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. It arrives sharpened and papered, sent signed-for and insured. Decades from now, the number on the blade will still tell its story.
Commissions start with a conversation, or with a design: the design tool lets you set out the steel, handle, pins, engraving and sheath, and send the draft straight to the bench.
Sharpened, papered and ready to send from Petworth. Sold pieces stay listed for reference.
Earlier Mariss, numbered and recorded. Each has its own page in the archive.
Every commission starts from the Maris blueprint. Set the steel, handle material, engraving and sheath in the design tool, and we’ll come back with a quote.
