Custom knives

Looking for a knife that's sold out, unavailable, or something entirely your own? The commission process is a conversation — and the easiest way to start it is to design what you're after.

A wide fan of Emberleaf fixed-blade knives — Damascus and satin blades with exotic resin and burl handles — on a dark backdrop

Design first, talk second

There is a click-to-build tool — find it on the design page. Pick a model, a steel, a handle material, a sheath. The tool shows you finished knives that look like what you're imagining, and when you're done you can send the design straight to the workshop.

But the commission itself is still a conversation. A menu can't read hand size, intent, or the fact that you'd rather wear it on the off-side. Materials look very different finished than they do in pictures, and we'll often suggest a steel or a grind that suits what you'll actually do with the knife better than your first instinct. The design tool exists so we share vocabulary when we talk — not to replace the talk.

Fifteen minutes on the phone, an email, or a visit to the showroom just outside Petworth — by appointment.

Made to commission

Knives we’ve built for clients. Past commissions aren’t for sale and we don’t make exact copies, but any of them can be the starting point for yours.

How a commission runs

Twelve weeks
The typical lead time. We quote a firm window before taking the deposit.
50% deposit
By card or bank transfer, once the brief is agreed.
Balance on completion
Due when the knife is finished, before it is dispatched.

You’ll see it being made: photographs at three stages of the build, and a final one before it goes to the courier. If you’d like a closer hand, choosing the exact piece of burl, say, tell us at the start.

What we'll talk through

Nine decisions make a knife. The design tool walks every one of them, visually — so if you'd rather see it than read it, start there and we'll pick up from your draft.

  1. Model

Start with the shape. Hunting, bushcraft, folding, kitchen, tactical — each model is designed for a specific use.

  2. Handle material

Stabilised woods, fossilised mammoth ivory, carbon fibre, Kirinite, Dichrolam, G10 — the piece we reach for depends on the knife and the owner.

Materials can be combined, too — pinstripes, liners, layered spacers — for something entirely your own.

  3. Steel

The model usually dictates the ideal steel — but if you have a preference, tell us and we'll match it.

Our in-house stainless Damascus is RWL-34 and PMC27: high corrosion resistance, exceptional edge retention, and patterns you won't see anywhere else.

  4. Edge profile

A Scandi grind cuts keener but is less robust; a micro bevel is more durable at the cost of a little sharpness off the stone.

It shapes how the blade behaves in cut and how you'll maintain it for the rest of its life.

  5. Pins

Stainless, brass and copper as standard; mosaic and EDM pins for something more distinctive.

Pins can be engraved too — initials, a maker's mark, a small motif.

  6. Sheath

Every sheath is handmade in-house and moulded to the individual knife — leather in black or brown, custom colours on request, or Kydex with hybrid carry.

  7. Handedness

We'll talk through placement and draw so the finished piece sits and pulls the way it should.

  8. Engraving

Initials, family crests, lifelike species studies, bespoke artwork — laser-engraved in-house, directly into the steel.

  9. Accessories

Edge kits, strops, oils, cases — we'll ask about anything else at commission so the knife arrives ready for years of use.

Sheaths, in detail

Sheath-making is a craft of its own. Every Emberleaf sheath is made in-house and moulded to the individual knife — never off the rack. You'll choose the material and the carry, and we'll build it around the blade.

Leather

Meticulously handmade, hand-moulded to the individual knife. Every leather sheath we ship is made in-house.

  • Classic black or brown as standard.
  • Custom colour requests welcomed — just tell us during the conversation.
  • Hand-tooled sheaths and mountings on request, including engraved silver panels for showpiece commissions.
Hybrid Kydex + leather sheath system: orange Kydex shells with removable black leather belt-hangers, two finished knives on oak bench

Kydex

Thermoplastic-moulded for a precise, retained fit. Designed around our hybrid mounting system so you can carry the knife the way you actually use it.

  • Stable vertical belt carry or scout carry as standard, mounted on leather.
  • Optional Tac-clip for fast mounting on belts, packs, vests or webbing.
  • Available in a wide range of colours — pick something subtle, or pick something loud.

Commissioning, in detail

  • How does a commission work?

It starts with a design — yours, ours, or a back-and-forth on details. Once the brief is locked we take a 50% deposit to begin and the balance on completion. Lead time is typically twelve weeks. Full walkthrough on the commission guide, or start directly in the design tool.

  • What's the lead time?

Twelve weeks is the working figure. It can be shorter if the materials are on the shelf and the queue is light, or longer for unusual stock or complex builds. We'll quote a firm window before taking the deposit.

  • How do I pay?

Card via the website for in-stock pieces. Commissions take a 50% deposit by card or bank transfer to begin, with the balance due on completion before dispatch. UK orders include 20% VAT; export prices are ex-VAT.

  • Can I cancel a commission?

Up to the point we begin shaping steel — yes, with the deposit refunded less any materials already cut to size for your build. Once the blade is ground or fittings are in progress the deposit is non-refundable, since the work is bespoke and can't be re-sold as-is.

  • Can I see progress photos during the build?

Yes. You'll get photos at the rough-grind, post-heat-treat and pre-finish stages, and a final shot before the parcel goes to the courier. If you want closer involvement — say, choosing the exact piece of burl from three options — tell us when you commission and we'll build that into the cadence.

  • Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes — fixed-amount vouchers, redeemable against any in-stock piece or as a deposit on a commission. Get in touch and we'll send a voucher and a written card by post.

  • How do I know if a knife is in stock?

Every knife in the shop is in stock and ships within a working day of the order clearing. If a piece sits in the archive, it's a past commission — not for sale, but a reference for what's possible.

  • Can I order something I saw in the archive?

We don't make exact duplicates of one-off commissions out of respect for the original owner, but we'll happily build something in the same family — same model, similar steel, different handle. Design it and we'll come back with a quote.

Start with a design

Before you brief us, it helps to have looked: the materials reference shows every handle material and Damascus pattern we work with, and the archive shows how raw material becomes a knife. Work in progress goes up on Instagram.
